Members of the A Menu for Change team had the fantastic opportunity to take part in panel discussions after the screenings of ‘Theater of Life’ during this year’s Take One Action film festival. In Edinburgh the film was shown at the Grassmarket Community Project where we joined in a community meal before the screening. The film explored an initiative of a high-end chef in Milan who set up a soup kitchen serving meals prepared using waste food from his restaurant. How this high-profile initiative fared against the complex realities of homelessness and social inequality was explored through revealing interviews with the chefs and the diners.
The post film discussion was a great opportunity to reflect on these issues with the audience, highlighting the limitations of charitable models and the importance of a rights based, preventative response to food insecurity which A Menu for Change is working to develop.
